How to Purchase and Use an Exam Voucher for the Food Safety Manager Exam

Step 1: Determine the Need for the Exam Voucher

  • Confirm that the individual (test taker) needs to take the Food Safety Manager Exam to become a Certified Food Safety Manager.
  • Important: An in-person proctor is required when taking the exam. You cannot proctor your own exam. Someone within your company or school will need to become an approved proctor. There is no cost or required food knowledge to become a proctor.

Step 2: Purchase the Food Safety Manager Exam

  • Add the exam to your cart, enter your payment information, and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the purchase.

Step 3: Receive the Exam Voucher

  • After completing your purchase, a receipt will be provided. The exam voucher, which includes the test code, is located at the bottom of this receipt. This code is required to be activated for the test taker to access the exam.

Step 4: Identify the Proctor Requirements

  • The exam must be proctored by a live person who is present in the same room as the test taker. The proctor can be anyone who meets the required screening criteria and successfully passes the proctoring quiz.

Step 5: Become a Proctor

  • The individual, who wants to become a proctor, starts the process by clicking here. Becoming a proctor is free. Follow the instructions provided to complete the screening and pass the required proctoring quiz.

Step 6: Activate the Test Taker Voucher

  • Once the test taker has completed the TAP Series Food Safety Manager Certification Training (course purchased separately) and is ready to take the proctored exam, the exam voucher must be activated.
  • To activate the voucher, locate the test code at the bottom of the receipt received after purchasing the exam. Click on the word “Activate” found at the bottom of the receipt, then register to take the proctored exam.

Step 7: Proctor Signs into Their Proctor Account

  • The proctor should sign in to their account and follow the proctor guide provided during the approval process.

Step 8: Complete the Exam

  • The test taker can now take the Food Safety Manager Exam with the proctor present. Upon passing the exam, the test taker will be certified as a Food Safety Manager.

Important Test Taker Reminders for a Smooth Exam Experience:

  • Identification: Bring valid, unexpired government-issued photo identification with a signature (e.g., driver’s license, state photo ID, military ID, student ID, or passport) to the exam.
  • Study Review: Review your study materials within 48 hours before taking the exam.
  • Language Consistency: Take the exam in the same language as your course.

To begin, you'll enroll in the Food Safety Manager course, which will prepare you for the proctored exam. Once you've completed the course, you'll take the proctored exam online, requiring a person to oversee it. To facilitate this, you can obtain an exam voucher for $28.00. This voucher covers the exam fee. For proctoring, someone from your company or operation can serve as a proctor at no additional cost and supervise your exam. You'll have two opportunities, if needed, to pass the exam using this method. Anyone can become a proctor, including coworkers, managers, or friends. Please note that relatives, family members, or spouses are not eligible to proctor the exam using this method. Please note that relatives, family members, or spouses cannot proctor the exam. Proctor Registration. For additional information and answers to common questions, you can refer to TAP FAQ's. 

Please be aware that TAP Series cannot guarantee that your employer offers in-house proctoring. To confirm whether your employer provides this service, we recommend discussing it with your supervisor before completing your purchase. If you plan to use your employer's in-house proctoring service, make arrangements with your supervisor to schedule your exam. Please remember you will have two attempts to pass the exam, if you don't pass the applicant will have to wait 90 days to retake the exam.

To become certified as a Person in Charge, individuals must demonstrate their proficiency as food protection managers by completing a certification exam approved by the Conference for Food Protection. This exam must meet Conference for Food Protection standards and be evaluated and listed by a recognized accrediting agency. 

The purpose of the certification exam is to evaluate whether candidates possess the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to competently fulfill the role of  a food safety manager

The Food Safety Manager Certification Exam is available in English or Spanish and is administered as a proctored, closed-book exam consisting of 90 questions. Eighty of these questions are scored, while an additional 10 serve as pilot questions for research purposes only. Each question is multiple-choice, with four options provided, and only one correct answer. The exam is exclusively offered electronically via computer, tablet, or smartphone, with a two-hour time limit.

Total training time: 8 hours. Either finish the entire course or only focus on the material you need to review. As necessary, stop and start. Practice the exam to be ready for the Food Protection Manager Certification Exam. Limit of two hours for the exam. The exam is frequently finished in 60 minutes or less by test takers.

Q: What is the minimun passsing score to be certified?

The minimum passing score is 70 percent.
